A Labor Day to Bike Home About
For the first time since 2007, we enjoyed a relaxing Shabbat weekend and two-day bike ride at Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center. Over 200 people came together to create a beautiful of community of cyclists, crew, family, and friends. Together so far we have raised $170,000 in support of healthier and more sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond.
Our annual Labor Day weekend bike ride, and the longest running Hazon event, began with a vibrant Shabbat, bringing people of all backgrounds together. The first day of riding took cyclists through the Connecticut and Massachusetts Berkshires. The second day of riding followed the classic Hazon route down the Westchester trail. Riders were welcome to Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) by Chancellor Arnie Eisen who spoke eloquently about the commitment of Hazonniks to Jewish Values, specifically to Tikkun Olam and connecting with the natural world.
High Holidays at Isabella Freedman
Home of many Hazon New York Rides and Food Conferences, Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center, in Falls Village, CT, is a 400-acre sanctuary in the Berkshires where Jews of incredibly varied beliefs and backgrounds make pilgrimages and leave transformed in remarkably personal ways.

The Talmud! / The power of a casual remark…
New York
August 30th 2012 / 12th Elul 5772
Dear All,
Jewish tradition is scrupulous about citation. In that spirit, I want to share with you not exactly a citation, but a throwaway remark, three weeks ago, which has already changed my life, and is likely to do so for quite some time to come.
It was from David Rendsburg, a friend and colleague who is widely admired and respected for being, in a way, the very model of a contemporary ish hazon: a fourth-generation Jewish cyclist, son of a phenomenal Bible scholar, gabbai extraordinaire. Both in his day-job and in his spare time, David is engaged quite explicitly in doing good for others. But this was simply a water-cooler comment: have you seen the new Steinsaltz? (more…)
