Jewish Community High School of the Bay California Ride Video Blog

Get to know the Jewish Community High School of the Bay (JCHS) California Ride team in their wonderful video and slideshow from last year’s ride!

In 2010, the Jewish Community High School of the Bay established its first organic school garden.  They have connected the garden to secular academic curricula and to all areas of Jewish life.  JCHS strives to engage students, teachers and families in thinking about their food choices and strengthen their connections with nature.  JCHS received a mini-grant to further establish the organic garden at their school as well as related programming. That’s Right, You Heard Me, I’m Not On Facebook

At Ignite, an event held in over 100 cities world-wide, presenters share their personal and professional passions, using 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds for a total of just five minutes. These presentations are called “sparks.” Boulder has an Ignite Chanukah event that is the Chanukah event for the 20s and 30s crowd. Hazon was a sponsor this year and our own Becky O’Brien,  Director of Community Engagement in Boulder, volunteered in a personal capacity to do a spark on why she is not a Facebook enthusiast. Siach, an Environment and Social Justice Conversation, brings together committed activists from across Israel, North America, and Europe. The following video, produced by Leadel, is from the first conference held last year.

While on a big mission, like when you go out to repair the world, you sometimes forget why you’re doing whatever it is you’re doing. Yet, without the meaning of the cause your mission may loose its goal. When we got a chance to talk to some big Doers on the mission about their goals it was truly inspiring. (more…)

Jewish Environmentalist Panel at JCC of the East Bay

This clip comes from a panel discussion that was held in November 2011 at the East Bay JCC’s Global Day of Jewish Learning event. The panel brought together changemakers from four Jewish environmental organizations — Hazon, Wilderness Torah, Urban Adamah, and the Teva Learning Alliance — to discuss the past, present, and future of the Jewish environmental movement.  In this clip, panelists explore engagement of the Jewish community. They ask the question, “Where do event participants come from?”

Cycling Advice from Suzie and Ilana

Suzie Rose and Ilana Horwitz, returning co-chairs of the 2012 Hazon California Ride and Retreat, are filming a series of short videos with cycling training tips. They’ve got the new cyclist especially in mind.

Suzie Rose is an educator and advocate in the field of Jewish environmental education. She loves gardening in her sunny backyard in Berkeley, CA., biking for transportation, singing on Shabbat, rock climbing, and creating community. Ilana Horwitz works as an education researcher. She loves living on the west coast, cycling, hiking, and eating amazing healthy food year round. This year’s California Ride will be Ilana’s fourth Hazon ride.

Their first two videos are “How to Keep Your Tuchus [butt] Happy While Cycling” and “Keeping Your Legs and Arms Warm While Cycling.” They have great advice for year round and winter cycling!
