Home Sweet Farm
Brad and Jenny Stufflebeam
1. Where is your farm located and how long have you been farming there?
Our farm is located in the rolling hills of Washington County, “The Birth Place of Texas." Our farm is settled near the famous bluebonnet trail where the earliest pioneers to Texas settled because of its rich soil, long growing season and ample rainfall. We purchased our 22-acre farm in 2004, and have been working the farm full-time since day one.
2. When did you start farming? What motivates you to farm organically?
Farmer Brad has been a professional organic horticulturist for over 15 years, beginning with greenhouse production in North Texas. At an early age, Brad felt a responsibility to be a good steward to the land and all creation in his care.
3. How many months a year do you farm?
We farm year-round, and harvest crops 10-months of the year.
4. How many crops do you grow, and what is the easiest crop to grow in your area? We grow over 100 varieties of heirloom vegetables and herbs throughout the year. Our farm’s most successful crops include tomatoes (35+ varieties), peppers, eggplant, melons and herbs.
5. Of the crops that you grow, which ones are you especially proud of? Tomatoes are our real joy. We hold a Tomato Festival every year celebrating the harvest, and offer the public an opportunity to taste over 30 varieties.
6. What is one benefit and one challenge of organic farming and selling products locally?
The greatest reward is knowing the families who eat our food. The greatest challenge is always the weather, along with the additional effort to distribute and market the food directly to our customers. However the extra work makes the farm more financially feasible, as we receive a more fair price for our labors.
7. How do you view your relationship to CSA customers?
We are completely dependant upon our members, and are thankful everyday for the relationships that we develop with them. Our members are not just our customers, they are our friends and neighbors whom we care about deeply.
8. What is one thing you would like members to know about your farm?
We hope as the years progress, that our farm can become a model for other small farmers across Texas. Farmer Brad is the President of the Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and continues to be encouraged as more people are becoming aware of the critical need to support our local food supply. It’s better for our environment, better for our communities, better for our local economies, and better for our health. Thank you for making this possible! |
