Making The Ride Carbon Neutral

Hazon has partnered with the Good Energy Initiative from the Heschel Center for Environmental Thinking and Leadership to carbon neutralize the Ride.

The Ride emitted 55.6 tons of carbon.  It costs 10$/ton to offse the carbon.  We are paying $556 towards the following projects:

1) The Bedouin project with Yad Sara focusses on cancer-stricken children living in proximity to Israel’s only toxic waste processing center in Ramat Hovav.  This project installs and operates 10 rotating solar systems with a 250w capacity among patients for the duration of the medical treatment, allowing them to pass the healing period at home. These systems are capable of operating a typical refrigerator and other medical equipment without a heating element. When the treatment is finished, the solar system will be passed onto the next patient in line – similar to the remarkable system operated by Yad Sara for circulating medical equipment.

This project begins in January 2008. 100% of our payment will go into this project.

2)  CFL's for Private Homes in Eilat and Israel’s Southern Region. With 95% of Israel's private homes using inefficient incandescent lamps – we reduce electricity consumption by subsidizing compact fluorescents for consumers that would never cross the initial cost barrier (tenfold). Using Heschel Center's successful projects in local/regional councils and schools – we campaign and replace lightbulbs.

Certified “Shomer Aklim”

CFL campaign 75% of the cost is dedicated to the project and 25% for overhead (including certification).
