Fundraising

Fundraising can seem like a challenge if you have never done it before. We believe you can achieve your fundraising goals just like you can achieve the mileage goal. Many riders from previous rides have told us over and over again, “It was easy.” “Fundraising can be fun.” “I reached my goal and even exceeded my goal.” “People were happy to contribute to my goal.” The Hazon staff are committed to helping you achieve your fundraising goals.

You will receive a fundraising pack after you register that includes tips on how to get started, whom to ask, information about where the money goes that you can share with your donors, and sample fundraising letters. We are happy to answer questions, coach you through personal solicitations and even read your fundraising letters before you send them out.

Deadlines

You must reach your minimum fundraising requirement by one week before your start date (May 31st for those starting in Seattle on June 6th). However, fundraising continues until September 15, 2012.  If you have not yet reached your minimum by one week before the ride, we will charge the credit card that you used at registration to make up the balance.  After this date, you can continue to fundraise and either earn incentives for surpassing your goal, or opt to have the charges on your credit card reversed to reflect the late fundraising.

To help you reach your fundraising goal, we strongly encourage you to set the goal on your personal web page above your required minimum (the goal you list has no bearing on your fundraising obligation; you are only responsible for the minimums listed above).

Eligibility

Riders must meet the following criteria:

  • Commit to meeting the minimum fundraising requirement.
  • Be in good health. If you have a pre-existing condition, such as a pacemaker, we may require a doctor’s note. We recommend that everyone see a doctor before you begin your training.
  • You must be comfortable with communal living and basic accommodations throughout the ride (ie: floors of synagogues/churches/Hillels/JCC’s, and at campgrounds)
  • To participate, you must be at least 12 years old.
  • This is a very strenuous physical undertaking and you should be mentally and physically prepared.
  • All riders 12-15 years old will need to cycle and remain with a parent or guardian at all times.
  • Riders 15-17 years old may ride with other riders of the same age or older at any given time.
What Your Registration Includes
  • Three meals a day
  • Accommodations throughout the ride
  • Luggage transport
  • Mechanical support and rest stops
  • Entertainment, education, and some entrance fees
  • A Ride jersey and water bottle
Additional Costs and Fees

Participants are responsible for transporting themselves and their bikes to the start and from the end of the ride. If you are flying, we will provide suggestions for flying with your bike.

We estimate that you may spend $10-$25 per day in personal expenses, which can include:

  • Wifi or internet access
  • Beer, ice cream, and other alcohol or personal treats
  • Souvenirs and gifts
  • Major repairs to your bicycle

We will have a crew accompanying us on the Ride, and if you feel that they have delivered good service we encourage you to tip the crew at the conclusion of the trip.

Insurance

Participants must carry personal health insurance to join the Hazon Cross USA Ride. Any medical costs incurred during the Ride will have to be paid by the participant. Because of this we recommend that every participant carry additional travelers insurance. Supplemental insurance for travelers can cover unexpected situations including:

  • trip cancellation for medical reasons
  • trip delay
  • medical expenses
  • accidental death
  • lost baggage
  • medical evacuation

Contact your insurance agent to discuss the best possible options for your needs.

Extended Stays and Guests

You are encouraged to come early to Seattle or extend your stay after the Ride with our optional Shabbat Retreat in Washington, DC August 17-18. There will be an additional fee for these extensions to your trip. Participants who ride for a segment over the summer will also be invited to join us for the Shabbat Retreat in Washington, DC.

Guests may be allowed to join you for a day of riding or meals for an additional fee.

Cancellation Policy

When you register for our programs we are counting on your participation and plan accordingly, and therefore the registration fee is non-refundable. If you cancel at least three weeks before your start date, you are not responsible for your fundraising minimum. If you cancel within two or three weeks of your start date, we hold you to a $500 fundraising level to help cover costs. If you cancel in the week before you are scheduled to start, we will hold you 25% of your fundraising. There is no refund or discount for arriving late or leaving early. Please note that donations are non-refundable and non-transferable.
