JFEN Seminar

Dig in the dirt, explore the Jewish agricultural calendar, and connect with other Jewish and food educators from across the country at the Jewish Food Education Network (JFEN) Pre-Conference. JFEN trains Jewish educators to bring conversations about sustainable food into their communities, including synagogues, Hebrew Schools, day schools, JCCs, summer camps and more. This all-day seminar prior to the Hazon Food Conference will bring together Jewish food educators from around the country to learn together, build professional networks, and share best practices. The JFEN training is open to all Hazon Food Conference participants.

If you have already registered for the Food Conference, you can use our pre-conference registration form to register for just the seminar.

Educators will:

  • Spend time gardening in the UC Davis Children’s Garden and discussing how gardens work in Jewish schools and other institutions.
  • Discover how the Jewish calendar is connected to the cycles of agricultural life, and how you can connect these ideas to specific classroom activities.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with other Jewish food educators from around the country.

9:30am Arrival at Bowley Plant Science Teaching Facility
10:00-10:45am Welcome and Introductions
11:00am-12:30pm Inch by Inch: Growing a Garden in Your Jewish Institution Educational gardens are taking root in Jewish institutions around the country. Sew some seeds and pull some weeds in the UC Davis Children’s Garden and discover how you can create a garden in your own Jewish institution with experts from around the country.
12:45-1:30pm Lunch: During lunch, spend time getting to know your colleagues and build connections with each other that will last throughout the Food Conference and beyond!
1:45- 3:15pm Breakout Sessions:

  • Home for Dinner Training: Participants in the Home for Dinner Cohort will meet for specialized training for the Home for Dinner Pilot.
  • Chagim and the Jewish Calendar – Cycles of the Agricultural Year: Many Jewish educators structure their curriculum around the cycle of the Jewish calendar and the chagim. Explore ways of connecting your lesson plans to the cycle of the agricultural year and the various ways the chagim fall into this cycle.
3:30 -4:15pm Closing and the Hazon Food Conference Begins!
