Route Information

The 2012 route is still under construction. Further details will be posted in the spring

Route Options

Our routes for Sunday and Monday will utilize back roads and rail trails in the Berkshires and the Hudson Valley. Our Sunday route will be a loop returning to Isabella Freedman, with options ranging from 40 to 100 miles. On Monday riders will take a bus to one of our starting locations, for a 40 or 60 mile ride into Manhattan.  Each route will have its own highlights and ride support.

The Hazon Ride was a profoundly moving experience for me. Riding over one hundred miles that weekend is one of my greatest accomplishments. At the end of my ride I broke out in spontaneous and unexpected tears.

Ride Support

All routes are fully supported, which includes detailed turn sheets and marked roads along the route. We provide rest stops every 15-20 miles which have bathrooms, shade, water, and plenty of food and energy drinks. There are mechanics and medics on the route, as well as other crew to provide SAG (support and gear) support as needed.

2011 Route Details

Details about the route will be posted started in the Spring, including detailed descriptions, route maps and elevation charts. The distances, elevation, and general terrain will be similar to 2011. Details for the 2011 routes are below.

Sunday we are offering four routes – 41, 56, 77 and 101 miles. All but the 41-mile route ride from Camp Kinder Ring to Eden Village.

Highlights of this route for all riders are two crossings of the Hudson River, including going over the Walkway Over the Hudson, the longest pedestrian bridge in the world.

On Monday we are offering two routes of 40 and 57 miles. The longer route is a direct route from Eden Village to Manhattan, while the shorter route involves a shuttle to mile 17.

Highlights of day two include cycling over the Croton Reservoir Dam and 12 miles of rail trails leading into New York City.

Please note: all routes are subject to change before the ride. We provide turn sheets for each route at the ride, although they are not available before hand.

DAY ONE offers riders of all abilities a choice of four routes – 41, 56, 77 an 101 miles – through the beautiful countryside of four upstate counties on both sides of the Hudson River. From Camp Kinder Ring, all riders will cycle the first twenty miles together through the rolling backroads and newly-paved rail trails of Dutchess County, crossing the Hudson River via the Walkway Over the Hudson – the world’s longest pedestrian bridge.

41/56 Mile Routes. After crossing the Walkway Over the Hudson, both routes meander together south through the rolling farmland and beautiful riverfront residential areas, crossing back over the Hudson River on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and arriving at a waterfront rest stop in Beacon. It is here that the 41 miler end their riding and take a hill-saving shuttle bus to Camp Eden Village, while the 56 milers cycle ahead along the flat eastern shore of the Hudson, through the tunnel under Breakneck Ridge into Cold Spring, before making climbing into Eden Village.

77 Mile Route. After crossing the Walkway Over the Hudson, the 77 mile riders continue on four miles of rail trail and then meander through a rolling landscape of the working local farms and vineyards in the shadow of the Shawangunk Mountains (“the Gunks”). The 77 milers rejoin the 56-mile route to re-cross the Hudson River at the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and then climb to Eden Village.

101 Mile Route. After crossing the Walkway Over the Hudson, the 101 mile riders continue with the 77 milers, but split off just before New Paltz to make an extended loop that includes a gorgeous six mile ascent and six mile descent of the Shawangunk Ridge before rejoin the 77 miler route through the rolling farms and vineyards of Ulster County and back across the Hudson to Camp Eden Village as described above.

DAY TWO offers riders 57 and 40 mile options from Camp Eden Village to the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Riders wishing to cycle the full 57 miles will pedal out of camp and head south through the rolling hills of Putnam and northern Westchester Counties to the Croton Reservoir. Following the shores of the Reservoir to the massive dam at Croton Gorge Park, they will meet the 40 mile riders (who will be shuttled to this location for their ride start) and everyone will continue across the pedestrian-only roadway atop the dam and meander south through areas including the Teatown Reservation and Pocantico Hills. To avoid the congestion of southern Westchester, the last 12 miles before New York City will be on car-free rail trail.

Below are the elevation charts for each of the routes. Please note that the scale of each map is slightly different. You can get a full map for each route by clicking on the RideWithGPS link.
